New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
