An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats posed by Chinese cars, while staff have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
This broader security situation highlights the importance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, including transport use to discussions habits.
