Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
